May Day Labour Celebration

May 2, 2013

Good evening Brothers and Sisters:

Today we celebrate labour and labours achievements in making our province a better place while generating the wealth and providing the expertise needed to keep our economy and infrastructure moving forward.

Today we also celebrate the change that’s sweeping our province, change that on May 14th with labours support will bring back the full acknowledgement of labours contribution and importance to a growing and prosperous Province we all call home.

The United Steelworks Local1- 424 with support from our District, National and International arm of our Union are proud of our contribution to improve the rights of labour and citizens who are less fortunate. Our Humanity fund has distributed over $25,000 dollars to local charities in our region, and over half a million dollars to assist in disasters and poverty throughout the world.
For over 60 years our local Union has worked to improve the working conditions, wages and benefits of our members while supporting our communities through some of the most difficult times. We have all strived to achieve gains for our members and the community’s they live in but none of this would be possible without their hard work and commitment to each other.
But the struggle continues as we work to make our communities a better place and fight for the rights of others.

The past 10 years have been difficult for our local with mill closures and disasters that claimed the lives of four workers and injured dozens more. The support from our Brothers and Sisters, businesses and communities from around the country helped us through these difficult times and for that we thank you all.

In Bangladesh over 410 workers were killed a week ago some as young as 9 years old. They worked in the garment industry making clothing for all the major companies like Wal-Mart, Loblaw’s, and Disney. On this day as we celebrate the contributions of labour, we must also demand these companies stop this insanity. We have an obligation to these workers and must apply pressure as organized labour to end the slave labour and carnage taking place in countries like Bangladesh. It’s shameful, but we can help and we should make it a national priority to support these workers in their fight for justice and fair treatment.

On behalf of the United Steelworkers Local 1-424, I would like to thank you, the supporters and organizers of this May Day event.
